Are you using a POP3 client, or are you referring to gmail's web
interface?  Gmail's threading is quite naive - there are many better
ways than simple subject-based threading, and I've submitted requests
for smarter threading and the ability to disable threads on a
per-label basis several times, as well as requests for more capable
filtering (gmail's "search for word in message" method can't
distinguish mythtv-dev from mythtv-commits very well).

Your suggestions are nice, and I'm not saying that they should not be
implemented, but you should also consider using a smarter POP3 client
and/or suggesting the relevant improvements to the fine folk at
google.
