I was also having strange problems recently, apparently because of a
broken hard disk. It gave S.M.A.R.T errors for a long time, but at first
I just ignored them. Later the playback was still mostly fine, but
seeking in a recording did not work at all. The total length of the
recording changed a lot every time I tried to jump forward or backward.
It didn't jump as much as it should have, and after a few jumps it
didn't jump at all anymore. Mythweb was also unable to generate the
thumbnail pictures anymore.

Later on the disk of course crashed, and I couldn't boot anymore... I
think I had similar errors in my myth logs. The messages log had this
kind of warnigs before the crash
