An ebuild is fundamentally just a way to script a build. No script
written yesterday can be expected to completely work tomorrow...?
[However, in this case I'm not quite sure why the script needs to be as
complicated as it is... Perhaps they are trying to support parallel
builds..?] Can't "we" just "support" the ebuilds here and spend the 5
seconds needed to fix them if they break? It doesn't seem like a big
deal really?

As an aside, I'm not really quite sure why you don't like the gentoo
package manager? It's controversial, but the nice thing about it to me
is that once a nice build script is generated then it's easy to run it
against newer versions as they are released. In particular it's quite
nice when you want to follow a cvs build, but still keep a package
managers ability to track files - for example I use it to follow the
mplayer cvs whilst still adding in some minor mods of my own - whenever
I upgrade I can be sure that all the old files are removed and hence
fewer possible problems with stale dependencies..

You could imagine it as a way to distribute the scripts to build and
install RPM packages if you like... The ebuilds can happily generate
packages if you like (which is the best way to install huge things like
KDE, just grab a pre-compiled package...)

Anyway, I started writing something else and have gone waaaayyy off
topic and accidently started down the path to advocacy. Sorry all
