Off the top of my head I can think of several free and widely used apps that 
currently must run as 32bit :-
Any web browser must be 32bit if you want to use plugins such as Flash player 
or Deja-Vu viewer.

Xine/Mplayer must be 32bit if you want to watch videos using the win32 codecs 
(WMV 9 etc).

OpenOffice must be 32bit as a 64bit version does not exist.

Xine/Cedega must be 32bit in order to use and run 32bit applications (all 
windows apps).
