If what you want is building against another environment, why are you
going CVS?

I can't say much about CVS, but if you want to stay with 0.17, why not
rebuild the src.rpm for 0.17 against your favourite nvidia driver?

Even if you don't like rpms, at least the specfile gives you the
recipe how to build it.
