This already exists; see contrib/mythnotify.

You can configure the geometry of MythTV to be less than full screen, 
and use another X program to display whatever you like in that area.

The only thing missing is the ability to bind keys to arbitrary 
external scripts; I believe there's already been discussion of 
extending the "User Job" functionality to do this sort of thing.
