Another thing I noticed last night, but ran out of time to play with...

The Makefile for libavcodec gets a much "better" looking set of optimizations
for CFLAGS, including -faltivec, which the myth code doesn't get through the
default setup... would it help?

I'll give it a shot tonight if I can if nobody knows for sure.
