My JVC TV has "Regular" (4:3), "Full" (16:9), "Panoramic" (16:9 variable
stretch), "14:9 Zoom", "16:9 Zoom" and "16:9 Zoom (subtitled)" modes.

I leave it on "Full"; this works with most channels as they broadcast
proper 16:9 and I can always scale it down to 4:3.

The problem occurs when a channel broadcasts a 16:9 programme with black
bars top and bottom so it looks OK on a 4:3 TV. I can switch the TV to
"16:9 Zoom" but it's a) less convenient having to find the other remote,
and b) the quality drops (see original post).

I do like the idea of being able to select exactly which zoom modes you
want to be able to apply, although implementing that isn't top of my
priority list at the moment. Anyway, I find the added zoom mode handy -
but if no-one else does and I need to patch the source every time I
build anew, so be it :-)
