you don't need any new code for that. Just a (safe) way to connect your 
reconfigured frontend to a different backend. How to do that varies from 
trivial (you and your friend on the same subnet) to complex (VPN between 2 
dsl connections). On the same subnet you could join both backends and declare 
one the master backend. 

To make that frontend (and maybe backend) reconfiguration easier, you could 
implement configuration profiles. Or you tear mythtv apart and allow multiple 
backends for a frontend. That involves joining query results from two mysql 
databases and other nasty stuff.
