For one these are situations where packaging will not help. Developing
on sources (like the patch you created) should be done in the
field. After testing and cleaning up the patches, one can start to
think about packaging. ;)
About /usr vs /usr/local: That is standard behaviour on Linux. Localy
built packages should default to /usr/local and vendor supplied ones
in /usr. This makes it easier to identify your own (unpackaged) sources.

I'm unemployed ;)
Seriously though, the real workers are the developers like Isaac and
co. I am merely packaging their work. It was quite tought to get all
dependencies packaged, but now packaging maintainance is rather low.
