[mythtv] [mythtv-users] mythmusic playing problem

I downloaded/compiled the latest cvs.

When I play an mp3 file using mpg321 on the command line, it plays
nicely.

But when I play the same file through mythmusic, it fails miserably.
It continuously plays static on and off (about twice a second)
eternally.  I have to reboot for the noise to go away.  

Any ideas where I can look to fix this?
