Presumably, it's much easier to "Save As..." the attachment and apply to 
your local source tree than it is to have to cut the relevant lines out 
of an email message and paste them into a new document.

Also, depending on your mail reader, you can easily sort messages 
according to whether or not they have an attachment, making it easy to 
find patches in an otherwise cluttered inbox.
