Or--more likely--if your .asoundrc is broken.  (Why blame the software 
when we can blame the user's configuration?  :)  Based on the fact that 
in previous posts you mentioned problems while using the ALSA devices 
"pcm.front"--which is a user-created device--and here you report success 
using "spdif"--which is a built-in device name--it seems your .asoundrc 
is wrong.

It would also explain the fact that you're only seeing 48kHz sample 
rates--even when you record at 32kHz.  The dmix plugin, for example, can 
only take 48kHz audio.  Similarly, many sound cards (the hardware) can 
only take 48kHz audio.
