[mythtv] no sound with cvs

I've been using mythtv for a while and I decided that I wanted to try out the cvs version (I haven't since 15)...I have no sound when I compile it myself, but I have sound when I use the version from axel. The sound works from the aplay but not from mythtv.   Any ideas about obvious things that could be causing it?
