Wouldn't it be much better (and not too hard) to introduce a stationid 
instead of using a value meant for user display as DB key?

Yes, I was thinking of doing it, but it seemed like a huge change 
crossing all sections of MythTV, Isaac wasn't exactly enthusiastic IIRC, 
and I didn't have an immediate need, so I left it as "later, maybe, if I 
really really need it".
