Sorry, I don't read so well, sometimes. These should be the most
up-to-date kernels. The only difference between your setup and mine is
that i don't apply the kraxel patches (they hose up my bttv cards for
some reason). Let me know if removing the volume stuff works though. I
could just change the return to a warning, and proceed along our merry
way (with you getting the default volume in this case). It is weird that
you are seeing the same message 4 times in dmesg too. But I'm not a
kernel-hacker, and I'm not sure what that means.
