Hmm, well it's slightly more odd than that :-) I had put in a pid for
subtitles, (I assume I entered the right value, but who knows). Anyway
removal of this entry fixed the problem.

I'll have a look at the code and see if I can work out what's going on.
(but as they say, don't hold your breath :-) 

BTW your channel editor patch is very useful.
