As long as the tuner is local you can use EXECTV as a menu action.  Look 
at the list archives on gossamar-threads for more details.  The nice 
thing about this method is that is communicates with the backend to get 
a free tuner and then the tuner gets marked as unavailable.  This 
prevents the backend from trying to use it for a recording.
