Interesting...  what *exactly* are the symptoms of the OSD problem others
are seeing?  I just have captions that often flicker off before you can
read them, but that may be my source material (Cartoon Networks does...
something...  that butchers CC data).  AFAIK the rest of the OSD stuff
works OK for me (I don't use OSD much), but I can test some tonight (I'm
at work now).  If I can find a channel with reliable CC, and that works,
and I can't find any OSD problems, maybe I can get back to making
KernelDeint work right (and format selection to go with it).

Btw, I'm using Gentoo as well, and gcc-3.3.2-r2.  Thor's "debug printfs
squash the bug" issue would certainly fit with it being a compiler issue,
since that's changing the code...
