Just a thought, but I seen a few devices that use the right arrow to enter a period or space in an input box.  Slightly awkward, but makes sense once you have tried it, and doesn't mess up the keymap I guess (assuming that your key logic is enter text box, and focus then remains here until space pressed to confirm value)
