A workaround is to insert "QMAKE_STRIP =" in settings.pro.
Or, since it's really qt that's broken, you can comment out the
QMAKE_STRIP line in /usr/lib/qt3/mkspecs/linux-g++/qmake.conf.

This doesn't happen if you regenerate the Makefile as Isaac
suggested.
