[mythtv] Myth API and Messages

I've been following the development of MythTV for a while now, and I'm
currently running the CVS (from about Saturday).

I've had an idea of something that I would like to develop - mainly to
familiarize myself with the code behind MythTV:

I'd like to create a "MythVoicemail" module (or something like that).
Lately I've also been playing with VOCP (www.vocpsystem.com), which is
an open-source voicemail/answering machine system based on vgetty. I'd
like to create a Myth module to access the messages (listen to/delete
voicemails, view callerID log, etc). That should be straightforward
enough, but the other thing I'd like to do while I'm at it is have some
kind of message pop up on connected frontends (probably depending on a
preferences setting) showing callerid information on an incoming call.

I'd like to be able to make some kind of call to the backend, and have
it deliver a message to the connected frontends for display. Obviously,
the frontend (mythfronted, mythtv, mythmusic, etc) should display an
overlay with the message.

Now for my questions:

First of all, would anyone be interested in this kind of thing?

Second, does some kind of message functionality like I've described
above already exist? I don't really want to re-invent the wheel if I
don't have to.

Third, is there some documentation available on the APIs for the various
libraries used by MythTV?

Thanks,
Matt
