Thank you - that did it! Once I kill artsd and restart mythbackend/mythfrontend, everything runs fine.  This won't be a problem when I set up a dedicated mythtv box without KDE, but in the meantime is there any explanation for why 0.7 worked with artsd but 0.8 does not?
