[mythtv] Plugins?

Hi,

Newbie question. Was wondering if there was any provision within MythTV to
write plugins for additional features, without the need to directly
integrate into the core sourcetree?

As I am sure has been suggested in the past (?) I'd like to see something
that can watch my mailbox whilst I'm watching TV (and notify me if I have
new email).

I was considering having a play and writing/integrating something like this.
