I've not looked at any of the relevent code but my personal opinion is 
that the recording should start from either the time they tuned to the 
channel (if they tuned in during the middle of the show) or from the 
begining of the program (or the earliest point of the program still in 
the ring buffer).  That's the way TiVo does it...
