Have you had a look at some other programs which have a nice hierarchical search tree? For example Microsoft Media Player loads in about 1-2 seconds (on my 933Mhz machine at least with 1,300 songs).
They use a top node in the tree to define search order (artist, genre, album), and then sub nodes from there for the detail. (nice way of handling search ordering in my opinion). However, even clicking the "All music" node loads in less than a second.
Winamp uses a funny search system where you click down through, artist, album, etc. However, I personally find is a little fiddly, especially if I was assuming no mouse available (however, fundamentally it is the same kind of idea). It is more sluggish than media player though.
What is myth doing during the initialise which takes the time though? Is the DB the bottle neck or is it module initialisation, or something else entirely..?
