I'm currently using the original SB Live! with Mythtv and the default ALSA
drivers that come with MDK8.2. It works... after a fashion ;-)
Actually to be honest I HATE the alsa drivers, their mixer wrt the SB Live!
sucks! The only decent mixer that works from my POV is the commercial oss
drivers using Xossmix. They respond more like the mixer under MS Windows. Ie
they make sense.
I have the Creative Desktop Theatre 5.1 speakers (original) and I am
continually adjusting the mixer. Normally for watching TV and playing music I
leave the CDT5.1 in Four Point Surround mode. Under alsa drivers I have to
readjust the line-in, line-gain, overall volume, out gain and pretty much all
other mixers depending on whether I want to listen to pcm audio (mp3's etc),
line-in from my VCR/digital cable box or tape deck, or watch TV via xawtv.
Under OSS Commercial, I can have front and rear channels working under all of
the above with minimal fuss, under alsa, I can't, so half the time I have
surround (rear) sound and the other half I don't. This has been a problem
since MDK7.2 or 8.0. So until I order a new license for commercial OSS, I
just put up with it, but I hate not being able to use my sound system to it's
fullest capacity due to a bad UI/drivers.

Is this with the default distro kernel or one you compiled yourself? If the
latter, modules or compiled into the kernel (monolithic)? Have you tried
using a clean kernel from kernel.org?
