 I have worked around this issue for now....

 By disabling (in my local source) the call to PurgeIdleConnections() and
 it has been working.

 I'll have to run it for several days (or a week or so) to see if not
 calling PurgeIdleConnections() causes anything other major issues.

 I know that PurgeIdleConnections() is there for a reason, but without a
 resolution for the issue this might be a valid workaround in the interim.
