 I tried LCDd on a combined frontend / backend, with the same results.
 After watching for 30 minutes, escape worked immediately.

 I looked at the LCDProc documentation and found something that may be
 relevant.

 I may be completely off base here, as I know little about the LCDProc
 package.

 Please look at your /etc/LCDd.conf file and if it has a [menu] section
 with a line !MenuKey=Escape, please comment that line and see if it solves
 the problem.
