 Thank you for this detail, although it may prove to be a coincidence, it
 does suggest a new possible cause of the problem. Not the out of date
 theme, but the dialog prompting you to upgrade. If this or another similar
 dialog isn't being closed correctly, or worse is opening in the background
 during playback, it may be intercepting the ESCAPE keypresses so they
 simply never reach the playback window.
