 You Welcome. The earlier patch prevented a different crash, not the one
 above.

 The good news is that since a couple of mythbackend restarts, I could not
 trigger a BE crash at all. The direct url test method you suggested always
 produces a picture in the browser, regardless of whether it existed before
 or had to be generated first. Thumbnail generation via mythweb seems to be
 working as well.

 The bad news is that I have just found oom crash entries in the logs for
 other processes, including mariadb. These crashes started to appear one
 day before I installed the modified backend with your patch applied, so
 they probably more related to a system upgrade happened that day than to
 mythtv, but I'm still looking into this.
