 I think you misunderstand.  You '''will''' lose recordings if another app
 already has the tuner in use (with a lock).  So in some scenarios you
 might win, but in others you have not improved your reliability (and that
 does not even include the scheduling challenges when the number of tuners
 changes at the time of the attempted recording).
