 > I read somewhere that one needed to run femon against DVB adapters to
keep the devices open and active to protect against some sort of race
between mythbackend and DVB driver shifting the device to standby.

If an external application has opened and locked the tuner, MythTV will be
unable to do so itself. Unless configured otherwise, MythTV opens and
locks any digital tuners it wants to access as soon as it runs, and holds
them locked until the application is terminated, to prevent this
 situation.

 > Perhaps there is a problem that myth isn't informed that pairs of these
capturecard entries are related, and therefore doesn't resolve some
conflicting configuration it performs on each individual device.

Correct. MythTV has no way of knowing that the analog and digital input
pairs are mutually exclusive. It will happily try and fail to use them
 unless you inform it otherwise.

 > I created inputgroups for the proper pairs, but this hasn't helped.
This doesn't surprise me, because I suspect inputgroups was not intended
to be considered in initial configuration anyway, and probably shouldn't
 be.

This is exactly the purpose of input groups. Both devices in the pair
should share a common input group, so MythTV knows not to use them both at
 the same time.
