 I don't think so because during the problem I had zero nvidia proprietary
 things installed (and never had).  I only put the nvidia stuff in after I
 couldn't solve the problem with nouveau.

 With the nvidia stuff in (and nouveau off) everything now works perfectly.

 However, I prefer to use open source drivers where possible.
