 This ticket can be closed.

 My Intel hardware may be a little out of whack, although memtest86+ RAM
 tests are okay and I run the hardware with clock-skewing disabled.  Other
 Intel hardware running the same binary (although on a different Intel
 motherboard) works without faults.  I'll open a new ticket if I get
 something reproducible on multiple platforms.
