 I have several videos in mkv containers with subtitles that mythfrontend
 plays but fails to recognize the subtitles.

 I will attach the output from mkvinfo-text showing the various
 video/audio/subtitle tracks in the mkv container.  Also a log of
 mythfrontend playing one of these videos.  And an example video showing
 this problem can be found here:
