Comment:

 Although the workaround was found, I think it is important to keep it from
 going into recursive loops in these very specific circumstances anyways.
 Bad data should not cause segfaults, ideally.

 This section of code is likely to be removed after 0.24, but let's not let
 this kill us in the meantime.
