 My "patch" is totally reproducible - take it out and the problem returns,
 put it back and the hiss goes away.  The code was a clean checkout by svn
 of top of tree (svn info gives rev 27015) but with your 27010 fix
 reverted.  If 27010 is applied, with or without my fix, the hiss returns
 so it looks like it's tickling a bug in PulseAudio, possibly to do with
 buffer alignment.
