 I have noticed that I am getting errors on a regular basis where I try to
 watch a record show and mythtv is unable to open the audio device, and the
 solution is that I need to exit mythtv frontend and restart to get access
 to the audio device again.

 I am using alsa audio and output to spdif.  which doesnt allow multiple
 access to the sound card.
