 I was using the CPU++ playback profile with the default settings.
 According to <http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Playback_profiles>, the video
 renderer uses xv-blit for Profile 1 and quartz-blit for Profile 2, while
 the OSD renderer uses softblend for both profiles.

 When I change to the CPU--- default profile, the Edit Channel menu works
 fine.
