Comment(by eric@…):

 For the record, I'm currently running Debian unstable with kernel
 2.6.32-3-amd64. I have two firewire controllers:

 {{{
 03:00.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6306/7/8 [Fire
 II(M)] IEEE 1394 OHCI Controller (rev 46)
 03:07.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB23 IEEE-1394a-2000
 Controller (PHY/Link)
 }}}

 The TI chip is on the motherboard and I couldn't ever get it working even
 remotely reliably with the Juju firewire stack. Jarod said he thought
 there were driver bugs with the handling of OHCI 1.1 chips. These
 problems may have been eliminated in later kernels. I already had a spare
 PCI firewire controller card with the VIA chip on it, and it worked with
 juju (at least most of the time). Maybe I should try switching back to
 the TI controller.
