 Latest news is that the frontend does not always die. Sometimes I get a
 blank screen for some seconds and a dialog that says "video frame
 buffering failed too many times". I suspect that the frontend was not
 actually dead when i stopped the two bactraces attached to this ticket. I
 will try to get a bactrace from an actual crash to-morrow.
