 More code reading - this time in scan-s2 to see what that did - which
 appears to be exactly the same as mythtv is doing to get the status, but
 for some reason
 ioctl(..., FE_READ_STATUS, ...)  returns an error for mythtv and not for
 scan-s2.

 my build was from a clean checkout from svn too :-(
 Similar things apply to the other functions I mentioned above ?:(
