 (In [18987]) Refs #2287. Begins cleaning up PlayerContext locking. There
 are still over a hundred unlocked uses, but the most common uses are now
 covered.

 If your running with this branch right now, please run the frontend with
 '-v playback', this will print potentially useful lock debugging info in
 case you manage to trigger a deadlock.
