 My guess is that this patch will never be committed, primarily because
 it's _not_ a fix, it's just a workaround, and arguably a clumsy one. In
 the mean time, a workaround is better than living with a bug ... mustn't
 grumble! The patch update should work, but I'm not in a position to
 actually test it just now ... :-(.
