 I've looked at the code for these patches, it looks like it may be ok. But
 I need to reproduce the actual problem, which means adding a slave to my
 dev machine setup again, and then I'll let it sit around a while in my
 tree to make sure it doesn't cause any new problems here before committing
 anything.
