 Oops

 On closer inspection is does appear to be working. It just doesnt report
 any progress.

 I've just tested on a 1 min recording and it does finish successfully.
 Guess i should've checked a bit more carefully..

 As for mythtv, i'm using 0.20 fixes from atrpms

 Not quite as serious a problem as I originally thought, but the lack of
 reporting still stands
