Log Message:

Replaced the VERBOSE macro with a threadsafe version. This uses a recursive
lock to try to avoid lockups when one VERBOSE macro is called from within 
another VERBOSE macro. The threadsafe VERBOSE macro helps keeps the verbose 
output clean when the frontend is run with '-v playback'.  -- dtk
