Log Message:
add some functions to errordisplay to make it easier in the code to check
for the existence of errors and/or warnings.

Commit Brad Templeton's "handy searches" submission, with some fairly
major reorganizing.  I'm sure that the whole search section will need
to be redone at a later date, but this is a decent addition of
functionality.
